Junk
keyword: sacrificial.
Is that a brian may red special on the wall
I'd scrape ALL of that lacquer off all the fingerboard to begin with.
5:00 naughty Ben.
It's great that you do unconventional things but it would have been nice if you had explained the logic behind using hair spray.
That must have been cut out of the edit.. Sorry, my bad.. The lapel mic cable had one too many close encounters with my vice handle 😭 Hair spray was the only thing I had to hand in my home workshop that would seal the gold leaf without damaging it.. Poor planning on my part mixed with impatience to see the guitar finished. Hair spray is often used as an alternative to artists fixative and it came to mind, and worked.. Luckily!
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Thanks. Nice to know. I might need it to seal my gold bars onto my belt when going through customs. Chance would be a fine thing.....
"I'm not an expert on Gibson..." *Demonstrates the sharp eye for detail and the knowledge of a Gibson expert.*
Quite cool that it both looks and sounds Baroque
Thank you, the sound was something I was worried about, but in the end is everything I could have hoped for. The perfect little festival guitar
I absolutely LOVE that body shape- so much so that I don't know if there is anything you could do with finish work that will alter how much I lust after this instrument- but I'll let you know if anything does change. In the meantime, I must say how pleased I am that you've returned to Making! I'm looking forward to see what you're going to come up with next, just as I did when I first discovered your videos about 6 or 7 years ago. I've been having some possibly serious medical issues that have been preventing me from doing much of anything at all- creative or otherwise, so even though I do love watching your creative process, it does sting just a bit, knowing I'm not able to use the creative urges you have always inspired within this old woman's soul. So just think of me when you have your moments of impatience if they begin to mission-creep towards resenting the process- - - -and just stop it, already! oh, yeah.... #SKULLNAME - the skull's name is Dali. Don't ask me why- ask HIM, for crying out loud. I'm just passing on the message. Mad Love, as always :)
my fgn is the nicest feeling guitar I've played (others agree when they try it). Not saying curved frets are the reason why, but it certainly aint hurting :)
they are cool for beginner guitars on a budget....or for perfecting the stylish Pete Townshend technique of gifting the audience with some souvenirs
Love the new neck rest. Hairspray? Really? I can't believe I never thought of that. I mean, it makes sense. Artists use hairspray as a fixing agent over pencil and charcoal drawings, so it's proven to work.
Plus hairsprays of yore used to contain shellac…
I did not know that!? Awesome nugget, thank you!
I was in a corner and it just popped into my brain.. I love the creativity that artificial restraints bring to the fore, I would have never thought of this in any other situation
Hairspray? WTF?
Awesome to see you back at it!!!! Love watching the builds!
Once up to pitch you can see the belly is lower than the rim across the f holes?
It absolutely was, I wish I had used slightly stronger bracing last year, but even under heavy gauge strings it is holding well and sounds great.. Not ideal, sure, but really not bad for something built in a field, with hands tools over only 4 days?
Your watch collection is amazing, Ben!
Ben - so glad you were diagnosed and are being treated for the ADHD. I'm 60 and was diagnosed as being "hyperactive" when I was about 7. Little did I know that yes, that IS ADHD. Fortunately, I developed coping mechanisms. When my son seemed to be mirroring my habits, he was tested and yes - he suffers from ADHD...and is being successfully treated. It's amazing how your life changes when you finally get this sorted. Sending good vibes your way...
Just watching you being one with the wood is so cool. Thanks for sharing. 🙏❤️✌️🎸😎
I really missed this, thank you for watching, I'm going to be doing a lot more like this moving forward!
Now put a piezo pickup in it and it’ll be perfect. I just don’t hear a lot of projection from it as is.
The plan was for a small bodied and quiet guitar to take camping or to festivals, I'm really happy with the tone and volume.. That being said.. I wojd be lieing if I told you I wasn't tempted to put in a piezo and maybe even a neck mounted mini humbucker 🤔😉
I can’t help but think there is a silicone cookie cutter online that would do the job minus all the faff.
Absolutely.. But what if all the faff is the bit I enjoy? In truth, I am enjoying learning moulding and casting right now for the endless possibilities that will bring to my luthiery..
Amazing guitar and amazing finish. I would love a solid body electric version of the body.
Drop us an email through http.www.crimsonguitars.com and I would be more than happy to oblige! I want one too!!
A worthy cause in Worthy Farm.
Taste is subjective but, sorry Ben, that looks like umpteen people have put their dirty glasses down on it. The shape is not for me but, remember, taste is subjective.
True that, on both counts.. But I love it and I hope that the next thing I do will bring tears of joy to your heart ♥
The fanciest guitar I played was a modern eagle. A 3k guitar and that was YEARS ago. Equivalent today would be about 10k. It's the nicest guitar I've played but I would never by a PRS. I appreciate them but I just don't like the sound or feel.
I agree.. And it hurts to say so.. I love the 'idea' of Prs but very rarely enjoy the experience with their actual guitars.. A strange one
Guitar of grace (elden ring themed guitar) 🔥🔥🤘 that looks amazing
Thank you very much!
Nice watch!
Yes yes yes!!! 🎉
Finally a Ben guitar build!!! 😁🤟
And many many more to come.. Gonna finish the hand tool first.. Then it is balls to the wall with all the ideas I currently have!
Is that the original "biltong chisel" ? 😍
The very same, well remembered!
Looks like something Prince would play. :)
High praise indeed! Thank you
baroque so dont fix it!!!!❤🎉😂
I need to shim my nut. I liked your idea of using a piece of ebony but, you did not say where to get the wood. Fortunately I found something that should work even if you need to shim a nut of lighter color. Stew Mac has binding that is.080 thick. In all sorts of shades. You can shim a lot of nuts with one strip of binding.
That was actual masterful playing. I hope you get him to play all future demo. It really proves the quality of the guitar/setup…
Thank you for the kind words 😁 ( I'm the Charles In the video) Hopefully it's the first of many, I'm really looking forward to all of the work I will be doing with Crimson in the Future, they're all awesome people and I'm very happy and proud to being part of the team 🙂 hope your day is going great
This right here… this is what crimson guitars has always been to me. No background music, just Ben ranting and talking while Making a guitar that no one has ever seen, and making me envious and wanting to push myself to create something extraordinary. Been here since the days of the old shed in the back yard and would love to see more videos just like this.
Thank you, and you can count on it.. I'm back and I am raring to go!
#namethattool looks like the chairs of a regisseur during filming. I thing #movieneckrest ore #ressigeur 🎉🎉
Good to see ben back building guitars. Good health sir
Thank you, it is good to be back in the right headspace again.. I'm having a blast and there is a lot more to come!
New tool name. African Ethiopian Tribes use a wooden neck rest called a Kambatta as a pillow
Please give us some names of famous guitarplayers that play your guitar. Please just one name.
Robert Fripp
4:24 I have been wondering how I should properly dispose of all the wood chips, sawdust, MoP dust, fret ends etc.? It shouldn't all just go in the kitchen bin to some landfill, right?
you will go in history as guitar building virtuoso Ben!
This looks amazing. I hope that wax can keep the hairspray sealed in, as moisture could cause it to reactivate and lift the finish. It's used as a "chipping medium" in miniature painting and I've used it myself to get an interesting finish on a bass I built.
This guitar reminds me a lot of the movie "Arrival"... all the broken and slightly blotchy rings
Wouldn’t hairspray breakdown with moisture? It’s not even close to being permanent. Also, the smell…. If it works with the wax, that’s amazing and once again, you’re thinking out of the box is inspiring.
Loved the series! Lots of fun
Flippin' Neck Rest!
11:30 is that glue squeeze-out I see between the top and upper side, that white glob? Additionally, I like the idea of the gold leaf rings, but perhaps a different shape, such as hexagons or ovals, would look less like "drinks left on a coffee table at a party" than do the circles.
Cant knock your innovation, but that gold finish is awful, I wont be watching any more of your vids, I cant be doing with all posturing and padding, Ive watched for the hand tools only build for months and its still not finished, keep innovating! These 4 films could have been one…
awesome! just like always! lml
Thanks for all the knowledge 🤘🤘🤘
It’s been long thought that end grain glue up is a very weak joint. Some guy on RUclips did very good video debunking that idea. One that dear for a very long time. Not to say that this neck joint needed end grain glue anyway.
